Big win with a disability
First, welcome to the Living With Disabilities Advocacy Website. It's run by none other than Katrina Smith, who's a person with a learning disability. Her mission behind Living With Disabilities is to bring awareness to all people with disabilities.
Today, Living With Disabilities wants to talk about the Oscars that recently happened on Sunday, March 27, 2022.
The 94th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. "CODA," a moderately lower-scale drama/musical once considered an underdog, won the award for best picture and became the first film disturbed by streaming services to win Hollywood's top honor.
In 2021 "CODA," made it to the Sundance Film festival and Apple TV, which was purchased after the movie premiered at the Sundance Film festival.
Why is the whole disabled community proud of the cast of "CODA?" People who are Deaf/deaf/HOH are finally getting recognized or should Living With Disabilities say: "Inclusive".
While some may beg to differ about people who are Deaf, deaf, and HOH being in the disabled community, others are proud to finally see a film that includes three Deaf characters. And that so happens to be Marlee Matlin, Daniel Durant, and Troy Kotsur.
Marlee Matlin was the first female in history to win an academy award in 1987. And Troy Kosur became the first male who is Deaf to win an academy award this year.
If you did not catch it, "CODA" walked away with three trophies, Actor in a supporting role(Troy Kotsur), Best Picture, and writing (Adaptive Screenplay)
And yes, that is something extremely exciting to be excited about when it comes to the disabled community. Coming from a person with a disability, we see inclusion. And in this drama/musical, Deaf actors finally have a chance to shine. What do you know they brought it home.
