Welcome to the Living With Disabilities Advocacy website. First and foremost. Self-published author Katrina Smith, a person of many accomplishments, has written six volumes in total: two cookbooks and four collections of poetry. Her favorite activities include reading and writing. Katrina would be described by one word: determined. Despite any challenges she may encounter, she does not let unkind comments decide her fate.

If you're a new visitor to this advocacy website, this page aims to increase public understanding of those with disabilities and other conditions.

We suggest you seek a licensed professional counselor or healthcare provider for anything you read on this site.

This week, Living With Disabilities will touch base on the word inspirational porn and why some people in the disabled community find it very offensive.

People with disabilities are often portrayed in the media and by others as "inspirational" figures. They are frequently seen as overcoming the odds of accomplishing what seems impossible.

In truth, some disabled people find these representations offensive. The phrase "inspirational porn" originated from Australian disability activist Stella Young in her well-known TED Talk, referencing the messages about disabilities that are of this kind.

The phrase "inspirational porn" may be upsetting to certain persons with disabilities. What do individuals without disabilities find inspirational about people with disabilities? This idea has nothing to do with sexual pornography, but rather with the unjustified stereotypes that many people hold about the disabled population.

What exactly is "inspirational porn"? A label that those without disabilities use to describe others who do. When a person finds an inspirational story about a person with a disability.

Is it fair to refer to "Inspirational Porn"? Our best option is no! Never see a person with a disability as an inspiration, even if you believe what you are saying will not do damage. But seriously consider this: What is it about a person with a disability that inspires you? If they had not been disabled would you have found them to be inspirational? We anticipate that you will have many questions. You really need to consider this word carefully and how it will sound to the person you are speaking to. As we've already mentioned, some individuals find it to be highly offensive, while others don't find it to be at all offensive. How can you tell if someone will find the word offensive? You have no idea, therefore it's best to play it safe and avoid mentioning the term "period".
