Welcome to the Living With Disabilities Advocacy website. First and foremost. Self-published author Katrina Smith, a person of many accomplishments, has written six volumes in total: two cookbooks and four collections of poetry. Her favorite activities include reading and writing. Katrina would be described by one word: determined. Despite any challenges she may encounter, she does not let unkind comments decide her fate.

If you're a new visitor to this advocacy website, this page aims to increase public understanding of those with disabilities and other conditions. We suggest you seek a licensed professional counselor or healthcare provider for anything you read on this site.

This week, Living With Disabilities will touch on  What's Special Education.

We have touched bases on IEP and the 504 Plan. We haven't talked about Special Education or Sp Ed classes. Hence, what is Special Education?  We will get to that in a minute. But, let's go over a few things here. More likely a recap.

IEP stands for Individualized Education Program, a legalized document under United States law that is developed for each public school child in the United States who needs special education.

Its created through a team of the child's parents and the district of the school. An IEP must be viewed every year to keep track of the child's educational progress.

Next up is the 504 plan.
Once you have graduated from High school, there is no more IEP, you have moved onto the 504 plan. The 504 plan helps remove any barriers an adult may face through college. It's more of a proposal on how the school system plans to remove barriers.

What do IEP and 504 plans have in common? They both come with accommodations.

After giving you a quick review, let's discuss what special education entails.
A government course created with disabled pupils in mind. Occasionally known as IDEA. A class that supports students with learning differences.

In this class, students are learning at their own pace and their assignments are being broken down for them to have a full understanding of their assignment. It all comes from what is written on their accommodation. Some may consider it to be an easy class. But, all assignments are different for each student, and whether the student can understand it and pass it to help their side matters most.

Special Education Teachers, are teachers that have been trained to work with students with different disabilities. Students that have Mental, physical and emotional disabilities or conditions. They adapt the regular class assignments for their students.

What happens if there are no special education classes? Some students cannot thrive through school without being in a special education class. As to where they're in need of help with class work. Without adaptive assignments, a student cannot become successful in their journey through school.

Are there different levels of special education classes? Great question. There are no different levels in special education class in themselves. When it comes to talking about the levels, it's the student that is at a lower or higher level based on school grade. Ex: A sophomore reading level can be at the eighth grade level, while another student reading level could be lower than eighth grade. It's the student Comprehension level not the class.

Does every person with a disability need Special education?  Not all students who are disabled need Special education. Some students are able to function mentally at a regular class level.
