Students With Disabilities Accommodating For Success!

When it comes to college, there's no more"Individual Educational Plan" meaning people with disabilities have graduated from the Individual Educational Plan to the 504 plan. Living With Disabilities is going to share yet another story of Katrina's and give you some tips on how to Advocate For Success!

Katrina Smith is an alumnus of Oak Forest High School, in Oak Forest Illinois. She graduated one year later than usual, in 1996 instead of 1995 due to some medical conditions. So, during her senior year, she started searching for different colleges to attend. After graduating in 1996 she then went on to a work program, Destiny Transition, and stay in that program until she was Twenty-one. She received her Diploma after exiting the program.
Proceeding to 2015 is when the educational door opened, Katrina Smith, made it through her assessment test, Scoring high in "Math" which she has no idea how that happened because, with her learning disability, she has trouble with Math.

When Katrina completed the assessment and filling out papers to become a student, she had to set up appointments with the Academic Counselor and the counselor for students with Disabilities. The Disability Support Program and Service is where the accommodation process happens.

Tips on getting your College accommodations!
Note: Do be aware of your Counselors when they share with you, not all professors will allow you to use accommodations, and if they don't allow it there's nothing that can be done about that. *Meaning you can't bring it up to the counselors. You will have to try and wing it. As Katrina has had a few of these happened.

 1. Know that you have now joined the 504 plan, you are no longer on the Individual Educational Plan. Some things may look similar. But, things will get harder.

2. Describe what you will need for your accommodation letter. Like, will you need to sit in the front row and etc...

3. Be confident in what you need to become successful. know that your accommodation is not your cheat sheet. you will need to work hard like everyone in your class. The only difference is you will need extra time to finish and so on.* This all depends on what you may need.

4. Speaking up for self. You are no longer in Elementary nor Middle or High school. So, you will have to start speaking up for yourself. * Katrina once again has been there and is still there. She wants to let you know that it may not be easy. But, You got this! This is your time to self-advocate for yourself.

5. Identify your barrier to effective communication, bring up what you will need on your accommodation letter. Like, some things you had on the Individual Educational Plan. * Know that you will not get all of what was on your Individual Educational Plan. So, this is where things will or may get challenging. Living With Disabilities is not here to scare you away from processing in getting your education, We want you to succeed!

6. Know when and when not to disclose your disability. Disclose your disability on a need-to-know basis, or when is required on your accommodations. Here is another head up from Katrina herself, If you have any medical conditions that can affect your ability in learning like, Seizure's, make sure you speak up about that and have it on your paper. This will follow with instruction for the professor, or the student assistant to contact the nurse of your school. ****This is very IMPORTANT! so don't leave this out of your accommodations.

Lastly #7 about your accommodations altogether, your paper is your secret to success, it's not for you to share with your classmates, this is only for you and your professor. Now it's time for you to buckle down and try to Ace's every test. Know that you can and will succeed!

Living With Disabilities will explain what's on the 504 Plan for educations.

What is a 504 plan? A diagram for how the schools will support students with a disability and remove barriers to learning. The goal is to give you equal access to school. * The 504 plan is really complicated. And Living With Disabilities will break it down for a much better understanding. Just so you know and as mentioned before, they're different than Individual Educational Plans.

These plans fend off narrow-mindedness. And they protect your rights as a person with a disability in school. They are covered under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. This is a civil rights
 law.

The 504 plan is not a part of the Special Education Plan, Individual Educational Plan. They're different and covered by different laws. But, the end goal of both plans is the same. It's to help you succeed through school.
And one way the 504 Plan helps is through accommodations. Like, we have mentioned before in getting"Tips on getting your College accommodations!" Accommodations in giving extra time and etc... And there are no set rules on what the 504 plan should look like. The schools write their own 504 plan. But, it's not a requirement. nor what it should include. And the only thing the schools have to put on the 504 plan is their policies.

Living With Disabilities hope you have found this article helpful, and that you share it with someone you know that plans to move higher up in their education. We hope that you share your own experience through school here with us too. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
