What's Self Advocating? Speaking for yourself and making your own decisions about your life, learning how to get information so you can understand things that are about you, and finding out who will support you through your life voyage, and reaching out to others when you are in need of help. Let's not forget knowing your rights and responsibilities, knowing how to solve problems, learning how to listen, developing mindfulness. Let's give you some examples of self-advocating shall we; collaborate in problem-solving skills, supporting decisions, raising self-awareness, and asking family, friends, Co-workers to treat you like everyone else. When it comes to living with a disability speaking up for yourself is a big key to getting your point across, and this goes for any situation because you only know yourself. Families, Care Givers, and Etc... can only speak only for a part of you. But, You need to learn to speak for yourself. What is there to know about you? Everything and this is the beginning of understanding yourself, strengths, and challenges of having your disability. And once you start to learn more about yourself, you will begin to find out what your rights are and where you can reach out for help, Support, and information for standing up about your disability rights. When it comes to yourself and your daily living, you are a person with a lifetime goal, you are the one who seat's in the front seat and take control of the wheel. Your Parent, Caregiver's and Friends can't speak for you 100 percent--you are the one who only knows you completely. People with disabilities rarely get to speak for themselves because parents or Caregivers want to do the speaking for them. But, People with disabilities need to take charge of themselves. However, to advocate for yourself you need to understand everything that goes along with your disability. Theses' are the reason to start self-advocating when the child is young. So, when they become of age they know more about themselves and their disabilities/ conditions. Everything in life is not always easy-peasy. Like, Oscar, the grouch would say: it's not always easy being Green. Speaking up for yourself can become a hard thing to do. Especially, when you beginning to learn the rope of it all. you're the pro to your own life. And the more you speak out about yourself, you will gain a lot of confidence in the long run. Always remember to be effective and respectful when you communicate to become a successful advocate.
